Fun Facts about Cornwall

If you have never been to Cornwall, you don't know what you are missing.

Fabulous experience and a really great place to visit.

So here goes. Five fun facts about Cornwall that I discovered on my recent trip.

Distance

First of all, let me dispel the myth that it takes too long to get there. it's 345 miles from Stockport to Hayle and including a wee break in Somerset, it took me 6 hours.

Now let's compare that to a typical flight to Spain, say Malaga.

20 mins taxi to airport, 3 hours before boarding including security and baggage checks, 3 hour flight, 1.5 hours to collect baggage and transfer to resort.

Total time almost 8 hours.

I rest my case!

Beaches

What can i say about the beaches in Cornwall, except that they are as good as anywhere in the world (weather permitting).

Craft Beers and Ciders

Cornwall is a mecca for copious amounts of craft beers and ciders. So much choice.

My favourite craft beer was Verdant Lightbulb, whilst Rattler cloudy cider is legendary and extremely strong!

And i even visited the brewery where Rattler is created daily!

Getting about is so easy

Now we all know that once you get to Cornwall, the road network is unique as the roads get narrower, the hedges get higher and getting about in a car, or a SUV, becomes a seriously stressful challenge.

The solution is public transport!

Yes, believe it or not it's awesome in Cornwall. There are a number of fantastic bus journeys you can take through the local bus company First Bus.

I used the 'Land End Coaster' for a spectacular scenic daylong journey around West Cornwall. It's a hop on hop off open-top bus service that runs clockwise and anti-clockwise around this part of Cornwall. £5 for a day's riding or free if you have a bus pass!!

Check it out here (and their other bus journies) here:

One distinct advantage of sitting on top of a bus on narrow lanes is that you get a great view when the going get tough on the narrow lanes!!

And then there are the trains.

Penzanze has a central train station to all the main towns, plus I went on the scenic train journey from St Erst to St ives, sensibly avoiding taking my car into the crowded seaside resort.

So much to do

Apart from the beaches, Cornwall has so many sights to see.

Obviously Lands End is top of most people's list but there is such variety of other places, such as the Museum of Telecommunications at Porthcurno for example, as well as the poppy fields near Crantock. Not forgetting Mount St Michael near Penzance.

Finally, whilst in Cornwall, you cannot go without eating a traditional Cornish pasty or 'Oggy' as they are known.

So that's the fun stuff over with, now here is a serious observation about Cornwall.

The cost of living there is really expensive. House prices are through the roof so first-time buyers have no chance. Fuel is 15p a litre dearer than where i live, most beers are at least £6 a pint and food in restaurants isn't cheap either. Parking is £5 wherever you go even if its just for an hour. Everything is more expensive than back home.

So, Cornwall isn't a cheap holiday as such but if you can cope with that then it's a part of paradise and a place I will return to again and again.!
